What Is Causing Decreased Divorce Rates?

Divorce_Rate

Marriages are meant to last forever, but the truth is that most don’t. The statistics have pretty much always stated that half of all marriages end in divorce. But nowadays, the divorce rate is even lower.

Divorce rates were high in the 1970s and 1980s. From 1970 to 1980, divorce rates increased from 3.5 per 1,000 people to 5.1 per 1,000 people. From 2000 to 2022, the divorce rate fell from 4.0 per 1,000 people to 2.4 per 1,000 people.

Researchers are trying to figure out why. It is believed that one major reason is that marriage is more rare than it used to be. Divorce continues to decline, which is likely because couples are more likely to forgo the tradition of marriage and focus more on cohabitation. People are waiting longer to marry, with 69% of Americans claiming to be fine with cohabitation in the absence of marriage. Views about marriage and cohabitation differ among religions. Catholics are most likely to accept cohabitation, while white evangelical Protestants are much less likely.

Marriage rates are at historic lows, with marriage becoming more and more selective. Not everyone’s goal is to be married and have children, like it was for virtually everyone in decades past. At the same time, though, attitudes toward divorce are tending to be more permissive.

It seems as though newlyweds are more serious and protective of their marriages. This is a good thing, as marriage is a huge commitment. It is an important institution that requires a lot of work.

Divorce rates have fallen among younger women. While older women are more likely to divorce, rates in women over the age of 45 have stopped rising.

Couples therapy may be another reason for the drop in divorce rates. Couples therapy reduces difficulties in a marriage while addressing emotional, behavioral, and physical concerns. This type of therapy also emphasizes partner support, improved communication, and the impact on the relationship.

Another big change has been the way people enter marriages. There has been a shift from looking for a romantic partner to looking for a companion. People are looking to marry their best friends, with romance, chemistry, and sex often put on the back burner. This can result in problems with attraction, but there is more likely to be stability. Couples are more likely to be bonded to partners who have the same interests and goals as them.
