Woman Killed In Port Richey Accident
When people are injured in an accident, it is often due to the impact of colliding with another object. However, in some rare cases, people are injured after falling out of vehicles.
Sadly, this is what recently happened to a Port Richey woman. The 38-year-old woman was killed after falling out of a moving vehicle. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of October 24 in Port Richey.
A 34-year-old Port Richey man was driving a Ford F-150 and was heading west on Ridge Road. As the vehicle turned left onto Lemon Road, the woman fell out of the truck. The woman was then hit by a Kia driven by a 21-year-old man from Spring Hill. The woman died at the accident scene. Neither driver was injured in the crash.
Details about how the incident happened are unknown. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.
Falling Out of Vehicles
It is not common for people to fall out of vehicles. When it happens, it is likely because the person was not wearing a seatbelt, and that is not only unsafe but also illegal.
When a person falls out of a vehicle, potential injuries include:
- Head trauma from hitting the ground or other objects.
- Broken bones or fractures, especially in the arms, legs, or ribs.
- Internal injuries resulting from blunt force.
- Road rash if a person falls on the asphalt and slides.
It’s not easy for someone to fall out of a vehicle. Still, here are some prevention tips to follow:
- Wear seatbelts. Always ensure all passengers wear seatbelts, even on short trips.
- Child safety seats. Use proper car seats or booster seats for children according to their size and weight.
- Lock doors. Engage child safety locks to prevent accidental opening from inside, especially with children.
- Keep windows controlled. Use window lock features to prevent children or pets from accidentally falling out.
- Avoid distractions. Ensure passengers are seated properly and avoid sudden movements inside the vehicle.
If you do know that you’re falling out of a vehicle and have time to react, you should do the following to reduce the severity of injuries:
- Tuck your body into a tight ball. Hug your arms around your body and scrunch up your legs
- Land on the center of your back. The center of your back is a large area, so the force of the impact will be distributed, making you less likely to get hurt. Do not try to break the fall with your hands
- Get ready to roll. As soon as you feel the impact of the ground, allow your body to roll.
