How to Help Someone Going Through a Divorce

At some point in your life, you may discover that a friend or family member is going through a divorce. If you have never been through such an experience yourself, you may wonder how to proceed. What do you do? What can you say to make things better?

While the person going through the divorce must do most of the work themselves, there are things you can do to support them and ease the pain. Here are some ways in which you can make life easier for your divorcing loved one.

Invite Them for Coffee/Interaction

Help your loved one get their mind off their divorce by inviting them for coffee, a walk, an errand or just some type of social interaction. Newly divorced people are often lonely and getting them out of the house can help. They need someone to talk to, and it can be hard for many to make new friends and strike up conversations with others. So invite them to hang out with you, even if it’s for a short period.

Talk Without Judgment

Many people are afraid to talk to friends about their divorce because they don’t want to be judged, nor do they want to be the subject of neighborhood gossip. If you invite your friend to vent about their divorce, you must keep everything a secret. Divorce is a sensitive subject and there’s no need to tell the whole town.

Don’t Badmouth Their Ex

While you want to support your loved one, you don’t want to engage in badmouthing. If your friend or family member wants to say bad things about their ex, it’s OK for them to vent. Just listen, but don’t chime in with your opinions as well. Just say things like “I’m sorry you have to deal with it.”

Cook a Meal

Making dinner can be overwhelming in the aftermath of a divorce. This is especially true if there are children involved. Your loved one may just want to come home and relax on the couch without trying to figure out what to cook. You can bet they’ll appreciate a home-cooked meal or even a gift card to a favorite restaurant.

Offer to Babysit

If your loved one has kids, they likely are long overdue for a break. They might be longing for a few hours to themselves so they can watch TV or run errands. Offer to babysit so they can get things done or just relax. They will appreciate the offer.
