Man Killed In Rear-End Accident After Stopping For Fire Truck

When emergency vehicles are on the road, you need to be prepared to stop or pull over. Unfortunately, when one vehicle stops, the others don’t always follow suit. This can result in a serious or even fatal accident.

Sadly, this was recently the case in Pasco County. A motorcyclist was killed when he stopped for a fire truck and was rear-ended by a vehicle that failed to do so. The fatal accident occurred on the evening of April 9.

The crash occurred on State Road 54, near Fencepost Drive. The motorcyclist, a 54-year-old man from New Port Richey, was traveling westbound on State Road 54. That was when he yielded to an oncoming fire truck that was responding to a call.

Behind the motorcycle was a Hyundai G80 driven by a 78-year-old New Port Richey man. The man failed to stop, rear-ending the motorcyclist. The man died at the accident scene.

No other details were released. It is unknown if the Hyundai driver was cited for causing the accident.

What to Do When You Hear Emergency Vehicles

While driving, you may hear or see lights and sirens from a fire truck, ambulance, or police car. This may catch you off guard, but don’t panic. Here’s what you should do:

• Check your surroundings. Quickly check your surroundings to determine the location of the emergency vehicle. Look for a safe place to pull over, such as the side of the road or a designated pull-off area.
• Signal your intentions. Use your turn signal to indicate your intention to pull over. This will alert other drivers to your actions and help prevent accidents.
• Get out of the way. If you’re unable to pull over immediately due to traffic, try to safely move to the right side of the road. Avoid stopping suddenly or swerving.
• If you’re unable to move to the right, you should at the very least come to a complete stop and let the emergency vehicle pass. Just make sure you aren’t blocking any intersections.
• Don’t follow too closely. If you’re driving behind an emergency vehicle, avoid tailgating. Maintain a safe distance, as emergency responders may need to stop or change lanes suddenly.
• Be alert. Keep an eye on your surroundings and listen for other emergency vehicles that may be approaching. It’s possible that multiple emergency vehicles may be responding to the same incident.
• Resume driving safely. Once the emergency vehicle has passed, check your mirrors and blind spots, then merge back into traffic safely.
