Man Killed In Wesley Chapel Motorcycle Accident

MotorcycleAccident11

Motorcycles can be thrilling and fun, but they can also be dangerous. In many cases, the motorcycle rider is at fault for a crash. However, sometimes drivers of other vehicles can be to blame, so safe riding is not always enough.

A motorcycle rider was recently killed in a crash in Wesley Chapel. The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of June 14 on State Route 54.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 53-year-old Wesley Chapel man was driving a Nissan Rogue west on SR-54, near Vandine Road. It attempted a U-turn at the intersection when it collided with a Yamaha YZF-R3 motorcycle that was heading east.

The motorcyclist, a 49-year-old man from Sneads, was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. The driver of the car was not injured in the crash.

When Other Drivers Cause Motorcycle Accidents

When another driver hits a motorcycle, it is often due to the following reasons:

  • Left-turn accidents. The most common type of motorcycle crash caused by other drivers is when a car makes a left turn or a U-turn in front of a motorcycle at an intersection. The driver often fails to see the motorcyclist or misjudges the motorcyclist’s speed.
  • Lane changes. A driver may change lanes without checking blind spots or using turn signals, leading to a collision with a motorcycle that is in the adjacent lane.
  • Rear-end collisions. Motorcycles can stop more quickly than cars. Drivers who are following too closely or not paying attention may rear-end a motorcycle, which can result in serious injury or death to the rider.
  • Failure to yield. Drivers who fail to yield the right of way to motorcyclists at intersections or when merging can cause crashes.
  • Running red lights or stop signs. Drivers who run red lights or stop signs can cause severe accidents with motorcycles, especially at intersections where the motorcyclist has the right of way.
  • Opening car doors. When a parked car’s door is opened into the path of an oncoming motorcycle, the rider may not have enough time to react and avoid the door, leading to a collision.

Contributing factors may include intoxication. Many motorists drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Distracted driving is also common and can cause drivers to collide with motorcycles and other objects. Cars and trucks also have blind spots that motorcycles can easily hide in, so they may be less visible.
