Principal Steps Down After Arrest For DUI

DUI_Test4

Drinking and driving is against the law but many people still do it — even educators who are transforming young minds. A Florida principal was recently arrested for drunk driving in Clermont. He resigned from his position shortly after the arrest. He had been the school’s principal since 2017.

The 38-year-old man, the principal of Leesburg High School, was arrested on the morning of October 26 by the Clermont Police Department. He was speeding when he was pulled over and  charged with driving under the influence, a second-degree misdemeanor.

The man was driving a pickup truck early in the morning on State Road 50. He was approaching Miss Florida Avenue in Clermont when he was caught speeding, traveling at 71 miles per hour in a 50 mph zone. He also failed to maintain his lane of traffic.

Police pulled him over in a traffic stop. He was given a ticket for failure to use a designated lane. Police also noticed the man appeared to be intoxicated. He agreed to participate in field sobriety exercises. He performed poorly and the officer determined he was driving impaired.

Police took an inventory of his truck before it was towed and it turned up open containers of Crown Royal Apple and Smirnoff Vodka. The man was taken to the Clermont Police Department. There, he was asked to provide a breath sample, but refused to do so.

The officer noted in the police report that the principal was very polite and apologetic. He was seen as a rising star in the Lake County school system. The high school struggled with high rates of poverty and the principal had worked hard to greatly improve graduation rates.

The man has pled not guilty in the case. He remains free on bond. A plea negotiation conference is scheduled for December.
