Woman Killed, 3 Kids Injured In Crash Involving Semi Truck

TruckAcc4

Semi trucks are large vehicles that can cause a lot of damage in a crash. They can also cause fatalities, which sadly was the case in Florida. A woman was recently killed in a crash involving a semi truck in Pasco County. Her children were seriously injured.

A 38-year-old woman from Hudson was traveling east on SR-52. She was driving a Kia Forte when she turned left at Prospect Road while the turn signal was flashing yellow. She turned into the path of a semi truck headed west and the two vehicles collided. The driver was a 41-year-old Port Richey man.

The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she later died. Her three daughters, who are 16, 14, and 13 years old, were all seriously injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The truck driver was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Why Semi Truck Accidents Can Be Dangerous

Accidents involving semi trucks are often caused by these factors unique to larger trucks:

  • Extended stopping distance. Semi trucks need significantly more distance to come to a complete stop, especially when traveling at high speeds. This increases the risk of rear-end collisions or accidents caused by sudden stops or traffic changes.
  • Blind spots. Semi trucks have larger blind spots compared to regular vehicles, particularly around the back and sides. Cars or motorcyclists in these areas are at greater risk of being sideswiped or involved in a crash.
  • Jackknifing and rollover risks. When a semi-truck’s trailer swings out uncontrollably, it can lead to a jackknife situation. This often causes multi-vehicle collisions, especially on highways or during sharp turns. Semi trucks, especially those carrying heavy or improperly loaded cargo, are prone to rollovers, which can cause widespread damage on roads, involving multiple lanes of traffic.
  • Hazardous cargo. Some trucks carry hazardous or flammable materials. In the event of a collision, these substances can spill, leading to fires, explosions, or environmental contamination. The potential for chemical exposure further endangers nearby motorists and emergency responders.
  • Driver fatigue. Truck drivers are often on the road for long periods, and fatigue is a major factor in many accidents. Despite regulations, drivers may still exceed safe driving hours, leading to poor reaction times or falling asleep behind the wheel.
  • Difficult maneuverability. Semi trucks have difficulty navigating tight corners, narrow streets, or sharp curves, making it more likely for them to veer into other lanes or hit stationary objects. When turning, trucks may swing wide and encroach on adjacent lanes, posing a danger to smaller vehicles caught in their path.
